Cosmological measurements of the fine structure constant

IFPU
April 17 – 28, 2023

New physics may present itself as variations in the values of fundamental constants. Observations of quasar absorption systems provide the opportunity to measure variations of the fine structure constant, š¯›‚, in the distant Universe. The team in Trieste, led by Paolo Molaro, obtained high quality quasar spectra using the ESPRESSO spectrograph with the goal to measure š¯›‚. Another team, led by John Web, has developed tools and methods that significantly advance the analysis of such data by removing human bias and allowing tests that were not possible to perform before. This Team Meeting will bring together the two groups to collaborate on the analysis of the spectrum of the well know quasar J1333+1649.
