Crossing Over the Edge: Black Hole Interiors Beyond General Relativity

Black holes are fascinating and multifaceted objects. Being one of the main novel predictions of the theory of general relativity already gives them a preferred status as essential pieces in phenomenological and observational studies aiming to test Einstein’s theory. This gets compounded by the failure of general relativity to provide a complete description of their interiors due to the occurrence of singularities. As a consequence, black holes are widely expected to both play a central role in testing the accuracy of general relativity and be the gateway to new physics. Within the framework of general relativity, black holes are synonym with the existence of an edge of what is observable: the event horizon. New experiments are pushing our knowledge closer and closer to this edge, with gravitational and electromagnetic wave observations revolutionizing our knowledge of the environments of black holes. However, crossing over the edge requires new theoretical developments. The goal of this workshop is to take an honest look at past and recent developments, appraising what is known and what is unknown, and laying the foundations for the future of what can be con- sidered a relatively new research area aiming at understanding the dynamics of black hole interiors beyond general relativity.
